VIRUS & MALWARE

Drop-off service only. Bring your laptop or desktop to me in Waynesville, NC. I don't do remote fixes.

HOW DO I KNOW IF MY COMPUTER HAS A VIRUS?

Any one of these is worth a look. Two or more together usually means something got in.

  • Pop-up ads, even when the browser is closed
  • Your home page or search engine changed on its own
  • New toolbars, extensions or programs you didn't install
  • Warnings that say your computer is infected and to call a number
  • Your antivirus turned off and won't turn back on
  • Friends getting strange emails or messages from you
  • The computer suddenly got much slower, or the fans run nonstop
  • Files you can't open, with a note asking for payment (ransomware)

GOT A "CALL MICROSOFT" WARNING?

Those full-screen warnings with a phone number are a scam. Microsoft, Apple and real antivirus companies don't put phone numbers in pop-ups, and they don't call you about viruses.

  • Don't call the number, and don't let anyone connect to your computer remotely.
  • Close the browser. If it won't close: on Windows press Ctrl + Shift + Esc and end the browser in Task Manager; on a Mac press Option + Command + Esc and force quit it. Or hold the power button to shut down.
  • Already let someone in or paid them? Disconnect from the internet, call your bank or card company, and change your passwords from a different device.
  • Then bring the computer in, and I'll check it and remove anything they left behind.
